- What is an Arena Driving
Trial?
-
An ADT is like a Combined Driving Event (CDE) except that
there is no distance portion and all three activities (dressage,
cones, hazards) take place in an arena. Additionally, the event is
always in "marathon dress" and the same carriage may be used
throughout the event. This event is great for VSEs (minis), ponies,
horses, and multiples. This is a great way to “test drive” and
practice for a CDE, and lots of fun for both beginners and experienced
folks. The goal here is to have a great time and learn with your
equine. American
Driving Society (ADS) rules as of January 2010 will be followed,
with exceptions noted.
Classes/Divisions
Equine Size: VSE/Small Pony
(under 42"), Pony, Horse (any of these can be single or multiple)
Level of Difficulty:
- Training: This division is
for beginners and novices AND ALL TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES. No cantering in any portion of the
competition - walk and trot only. ADS ADT Training Test in dressage.
Calling of the test allowed at training only for junior drivers. Gates A-B-C in hazards.
- Preliminary: Four-wheeled
vehicles. Cantering
allowed in hazards and cones course only. ADS ADT Prelim Test in
dressage. Gates A-B-C-D in hazards.
- Intermediate: Four-wheeled
vehicles. Cantering
allowed anywhere on course. ADS ADT Intermediate Test in dressage. Gates A-B-C-D-E in hazards.
- Advanced: Four-wheeled
vehicles. Cantering
allowed anywhere on course. ADS ADT Advanced Test in dressage. Gates A-B-C-D-E-F in hazards
Dress:
- The entire event can take place in marathon
dress. All phases require a safety helmet. Shorts are
permitted due to heat, but at your discretion as they are less safe
than long pants in a fall. Sunglasses permitted.
Volunteer Officials:
- Judge: Ellen
Ettenger (Ellen is a USEF and ADS "R" Technical
Delegate in Combined Driving)
- Course Designer: John Porter
(John is an USEF/FEI Combined Driving Steward and ADS Learner Judge
and Technical Delegate)
- Technical Delegate:
Erika Matulich (Erika is an ADS "r" Technical
Delegate in both Combined Driving and Pleasure Driving

Cones will immediately follow your
dressage. Cones will be approximately 16-20 gates, and could include a
serpentine, and will include either an "L" or a "U."
Cones will be scored as a TIMED competition (0.5 penalties per elapsed
second, plus balls down, different than CDEs. Cones clearances are:
- VSE-Training Track width plus 35 cm
- Horse/Pony Training Track width plus
40 cm
- VSE-Preliminary Track width plus 30
cm
- Horse/Pony Preliminary Track width
plus 35 cm
- VSE-Intermediate Track width plus 20
cm
- Horse/Pony Intermediate Track width
plus 30 cm
- Horse/Pony Advanced Track width plus
20 cm
- Increase clearance by 10cm. for
tandems and four-in-hands
Hazards will be
in the arena. Two portable hazards will be set up and drivers will drive
Hazard 1 and Hazard 2 in alphabetical gate
order. Drivers
will then take a brief break while others in their class complete the
hazards. Then drivers will drive the same two hazards (now indicated as
Hazards 3 and 4) in alphabetical gate order. Navigators can navigate for different drivers, and drivers can swap and
become a navigator for someone else. Hardhats/safety helmets are
required for both driver and navigator.
